As social media becomes an increasingly integral part of our lives, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks that come with sharing personal information online. With the new policy, the company has improved its People You May Know recommendation system for teens by including stricter parameters for recommendations and excluding suspicious accounts. Tools have also been added and improved regarding friend lists, photo visibility, and the ability to tag someone on them. Serious attention has also been paid to combating the sending of unwanted intimate images.
Additionally, Meta is now giving teenagers the option to choose who can see their posts – including posts that have been shared with them – and is making it easier for them to report abuse.
All of these changes are intended to make their apps a safer and more positive experience for teenagers, who are an important part of the social media giant’s user base. With billions of monthly active users, Meta has a responsibility to ensure that all of its users, including teenagers, are able to enjoy the platform in a safe and secure environment.
The new features and tools are a step in the right direction, but it’s important for parents to talk to their teens about online safety and privacy as well. After all, even with the best tools in place, it’s still up to each individual to use them in a way that protects their own privacy.
